Victorian gardens on a slope
Saltburn's planned Victorian streets came with long, narrow gardens, many of them terraced down a slope or falling away towards the valley. Sloping lawns behave differently: rain runs off before it soaks in, the top of the slope dries out while the bottom stays wet, and mowing wear concentrates on the same lines every week. Aeration on a slope is genuinely useful because it gives water somewhere to go instead of sheeting away.
A wetter, cooler microclimate
Ground rising towards Brotton, Skelton and the moor edge catches noticeably more rain and colder nights than the Tees valley floor. That means moss pressure is higher, the growing season starts a little later and ends a little earlier, and the autumn renovation window shifts forward by a couple of weeks. Booking scarification for the first half of September rather than October is worth doing here.
Coastal edge
Gardens close to the cliff top take the full weight of onshore wind. Fine ornamental grasses struggle; robust ryegrass and fescue blends cope far better. Where a lawn is genuinely exposed, an honest quote will talk about shelter and seed choice before it talks about a fifth feeding visit.
